Nick started work in 1977 with Architect Monro & Partners who focused on retail projects. In 1979 Nick joined dpa and focused his career on lighting design. As well as learning a huge amount from practice Principal Derek Phillips he attended South London Polytechnic which focused on the more engineering aspects of lighting consultancy.
Nick became a partner of dpa lighting consultants in 1986, and co-Director of dpa lighting consultants Hong Kong. Derek retired in 1993 and Nick became principal, in 1995 formed a partnership with Barry Hannaford who opened a London office for the practice. In 2004 Nick and Barry opened an office in Dubai and then in 2007 an office in Japan. Nick has been at the forefront of promoting well considered lighting, delivering a wide range of lectures and writing articles throughout the world.
Nick has been involved in a number of institutional appointments for the IALD, CIBSE now SSL, the organiser of a conference and lighting show in London and a senior visiting lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL in connection with the MSc Architecture, Light & Lighting. Nick believes strongly in the strength of the collective team at dpa and has deliberately recruited a wide variety of designers with different backgrounds to tackle the varying challenges our discipline requires.
Photography has always been an important part of Nick’s life and to celebrate the practices 50th Anniversary Nick exhibited his work in London, Dubai and Japan. Nick is passionate about the natural world and uses any free time to explore and photograph its beauty.
